May is considered the bliss month – we want to clarify whether AMD’s new graphics cards are a delight in our special and connect this with a graphics card purchase advice. But what is it all about? AMD released three new graphics card series last Tuesday, and it is Refresh of the Radeon RX 6600 XT, RX 6700 XT and RX 6900 XT. The three new rows marks the number 5 at the third place in the model number – i.e. 6650, 6750 and 6950. Of all three new series, there are also currently available model variants from at least six different partner manufacturers in stores, of which we later also 13 Examples will be summarized in a table.

Today we also look at the technology of the new graphics cards and want to determine their performance by charging several tests of specialist editors published since Tuesday in our own analysis. So we can present you a good overview of the game performance. Of course, when it comes to how worthwhile the new models are, the price plays an important role. According to the performance assessment, there is also a price-performance analysis in which we can include all graphics cards of the AMD 6000 and NVIDIA 3000 series and thus give a general purchase recommendation.

The new AMD series RX 6650 XT, RX 6750 XT and RX 6950 XT covers the price ranges of around 450 to 1300 euros and compete in addition to their AMD predecessors, of whom the RX 6600 XT is available from 420 euros With many Nvidia model series. But first it’s about the technology of the AMD refresh.

AMD RX 6000 refresh: technology

On the technical side, there are no surprises or special innovations on the new AMD graphics cards. Unlike the Ryzen-Refresh (Ryzen 7 5800x3d as a refresh of the normal Ryzen 7 5800X, see our special from April), there is no significant new change in architecture.

Nevertheless, AMD gets more power from the three new graphics cards that have a slightly higher TDP than the old basic models. For an improvement in efficiency, the percentage increase in performance should be at least as high as the relative TDP increase, although the TDP does not exactly meet the electricity requirement. But we come to the electricity requirement after the performance analysis.

What methods does AMD apply to the performance plus when it is not about an architectural change? Even a plus of the computing or shading units is not the means of choice. Rather, AMD develops the performance plus over higher clock values and faster RAM, which in combination with small changes in graphics card design apparently can be implemented without any other disadvantages.

In the following table you can see the technical data of the new AMD series compared to their basic variants including the TDP or the electricity requirement specified by AMD:

For a better overview, we have left a column freedom between the three couples (basic and refresh version). The percentage in the “additional current requirement” column shows you the plus of the Refresh card compared to the basic version-AMD does not only create a performance plus, but also an efficiency improvement? You can find out what it looks like with performance and electricity needs on the next page.
